That's lens flare. How to fix this in post... lots of cloning I guess, probably will take a bit of time. Someone else should be able to help with that... I'm not super great at photoshop.

How to prevent it in the future (MUCH easier then photoshop):

    1) Buy/use a lens hood. I keep mine on all the time.... helps with this, and also protects things from hitting the front of the lens. Easiest b/c once you put it on you don't have to think about it anymore.
    2) Hold your hand over/above the lens to block sun.
    3) Have someone hold a card or something over lens.
    4) If you are shooting into the sun or close to it, remove your UV filter (if you have one on). It often increases the flare produced.

Lens flare (which can be used artistically) but that would be a royal pain to fix that.... I could fix it, but it's not worth it on a snapshot like that, reshoot it....

If you have a UV filter on your lens that will add to the lens flare too....

How to fix it ?? Hard Work is the answer.
I was asked to fix some wedding photos that had flare across faces and I must say I haven't tackled anything harder personally. It took not only time but patience for it was a very slow go with many trials and errors. If your not thoroughly familiar with photoshop & working with layers & masks then I wouldn't even attempt it - just shoot it over!
    Thats pretty funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

    Two alternative methods:

Method One: Crop what doesnt work
    1. crop out mom with the weird expression and the lens flare.

    Additional touchups:
    2. clone out pool
    3. Vignette
    4. Sharpen
    5. sponge on some saturation
    6. dodge a little bit
    IMG_1252b.jpg

    or

    Method Two: The Holy Crop

Realize that the best picture you had wasn't the one you were trying to take :) (Oh man, thats deep)
Iits a little choppy because of the resolution at that zoom level, but I'm sure if you worked with the original it'd render better.

Crop until you find the picture, heavily burn some vignette, spot sharpen the hands, blur the rest, dodge as necessary, turn down saturation, add some tone, overlay blended layer ... do stuff to make it look artsy fartsy... charge double-price.

UHMmmmm.... Sorry Joe, that was the worst advice ever! It can be color corrected with a curves layer and some masking, residual flare would then be cloned out...

Did you read what I wrote - I wasnt giving advice on color correcting the flare. You all told her that its too much work to get rid of the flare! Why didnt you just suggest the curves and masking and cloning? So, I wasnt going to do a write-up on how to get rid of it when you all said it was too much of a bitch - so instead I advised a creative approach to just crop it out and find a picture within the picture.

Frankly I really like the second image I came up with (aside from the resolution issues) - it created a more powerful image - rather than just "kids jumping" its now a powerful representation of the bond between a brother and sister...or some touchy feely B.S. like that which any mom would love.... take that to the bank.

Its all fairly practical advice and a creative approach to a problem. I'm curious if anyone agrees that its the worst advice ever, Lol.

Joe is was def not the worse advice ever ! I really like the idea of cropping it out and plan to do so . . " Re-shooting " them isnt a option so this is a great alterntive since i dont know how to fix it in PS. I also agree the 2nd shot of the kids holding hands is total win.

10 minutes..... And no cloning what-so-ever... Could I have done better with a higher res image, that hasn't been compressed to hell by the forum software, sure....

Do it right is my motto!!!!

Heather your avatar changes I'm finding difficult to stay up with :)

As far as Joe's take on the images, "worst advice ever" is too harsh but I also don't like either representation and to me aren't a viable option - the 1st one by cropping mom out as well as the bottom looks strange to me, as it looks like you were pissed at mom so you cropped her out - I prefer the original with flare. As far as the 2nd goes I don't "get it" at all and I don't think any mom would pay for either one that way. If she is trying to develop clients & a portfolio IMHO I would just scrap the 2 shots & move on.

I remember someone here making or repeating a quote and I'm paraphrasing "The difference between a professional & an amateur is you will never see the professionals bad photos" I feel this fits that scenario.

10 minutes by a photoshop pro doesn't equate to 10 minutes to us mere mortals!
I wasn't cloning either, I was masking adjustment layers to remove most of it., then saw your post.
I took about 15 minutes and wasn't close to yours but was getting there... in more time probably another 20 minutes.
    Very impressive work!
    Heather will be thrilled.

I understand that 10 minutes to me isn't 10 minutes to someone else, but there are people who can do more in 10 minutes than I can do in an hour too...

That quote was told to me by an SI photographer I was working with who was doing this before I was born, I figured if he had over 40 years of true working knowledge I probably should listen to him....
