Photography's greatest gift to us may be the fact that it allows us to look back on the past with more than memories or words. Let's use this thread to dredge up some old photos with character. I'm not talking about five years or 10 years ago. I'm talking memories of bygone times...30, 40, years or more, the photos you have in your shoebox. How about it? Maybe even a line or two telling us the W's (who, what, when, where)

I'll start it off with a couple of real oldies, that have only been color corrected during scanning ...

The 1st photo is circa 1905, my great grandfather Dominic (father's side) in front of his grocery store in Brooklyn. My father sold it in 1960 and moved us to the Island.

The 2nd photo is circa 1880 my great great grandfather Salvatore (mother's side) in front of his saloon in NYC he's far left. Story goes he was shot & killed in his store by an irate husband, why ? well we only can guess! His wife sold it the same year.

Thanks for sharing these Ron. I love photos like this.
Unfortunately I have nothing to share of my own, but look forward to seeing more.

Great thread. I actually collect vintage photos - I buy them online, or antique shops, or flea markets . My past two girlfriends have thought its creepy and my friend said to me recently "yes i think its weird that you have photos of other people's family on your walls" Lol. But when I buy a vintage photo I look for stuff thats unique, if its odd, or makes me laugh or smile or feel some sort of emotion - I tend to like ones that have humor or make you say WTF?!?

Maybe I'll share some from my collection on this thread - but for now - Ron, your post reminded me of a photo my aunt recently scanned for me. Its of my great-grandfather too. His name was Arthur Weindorf he was a listed artist, a published political cartoonist, architect that helped design some of NYC's subway stations (his work is in some archives in Manhattan). Every time I find one of his paintings or drawings on ebay, I buy it. Anyhow - for some reason, later in life he also was... a barber. He held speed records (I suppose locally) for the fastest straight-blade shave. After he died NYC declared a day in his name for that year.

A funny thing I read once in an old article that reviewed some exhibition of his political cartoons - they called him 'a piddling punster and ugly draughtsman'. I googled the term "piddling punster" and nothing came up - so I think of my great grandfather as THE original piddling punster. Ugly draughtsman - refers to his drafting work as an architect.

I'll post the original photo and the photo I spent some time cleaning up in photoshop. The scan quality wasnt the best (and the original I'm downloading from my facebook because I cant find it on my PC at the moment.

There really is something about old photos that tell great stories - Nice to see others keep the memory alive of those before them. I love these snidbits of days gone by ! I'm kinda lucky, I have tons of photos from my forefathers as does my wife. I'll share some if this thread continues ...

Great photo Joe !!... Besides being a "piddling punster" ??? your great grandfather sounds like he had quite a life. Nice to think maybe some of your artistic flair comes from the same blood as your ancester.

    Thanks for sharing !!

I'll post another. Not of any ancestors this time - but this is one of my favorite photos from my vintage photo collection. When I see shots like this - I think... I have a virtually unlimited memory card, I can see my photos instantly and literally take about 50 photos over 5 seconds.... and I believe I'd have a hard time capturing this shot that was done so well probably 60 years ago - presumably by an amateur.

For some reason I love this image - the form, the old school outfits and swim trunks, the really-strong framing and composition, the sharp focus, the slight amount of motion blur, the kid in the bottom right in an old swimsuit, the expressions and posing of the bystanders, and the pool that looks like its empty - which is funny to me (from other shots I have I've learned that thats just what they used to look like).

The original photo is 3"x5" - I had it scanned at 2000 DPI - cleaned up the dust and what not, and had it printed 30 inches wide... the print shop said not to bother trying to blow up something so small so big ... it came out awesome though and is the focal item in my living room.

I don't think its wierd to have old photos like this on your walls, even though they are not relatives. This image is great! I like the girl in her very modest bikini.

Hey Joe here's a couple for your walls, I bought these repo's from a fair in Bethpage about 20 years ago so they must be common, but Long Island history none the less. I think they sold 2fer $.25ยข - each photo is labeled.
Anyone familiar with either of these areas today :)

My town use to be called Jericho, which is now a town on Long Island, but they renamed my town in the early 1800's. (saw Jericho mentioned in the last photograph)
