Hi everyone, I am looking for Owls to photograph on the Island in the wild. Does anyone know of some nests or loacations, I have been itching to get some glass on some Snowy Owls down at the beach as well. Thanks fore any input. Wayccol
I don't know of any area to tell you as they are extremely rare but I read one was spotted in Brooklyn - here's the link.http://www.sheepsheadbites.com/2011/11/amazing-winged-wonder-spotted-near-the-narrows/ This is the only Snowy Owl I've seen ... Spotted in Universal's Wizarding World of Harry Potter
They spot them in the dunes on Fire Island and at Jones beach each winter but I have never had the chance to get photos of them.
I've been down there alot lately getting pictures of the deer, bridges and Robert moses tower. Haven't once seen an owl yet. I did see a fox 2x and plenty of deer being their in the rut and it's winter and they got to scavenge for food. I actually was about 5 ft from a nice 8 point mature buck and he sniffed me out and walked away. Never was spooked and was cool with me taking pictures of him and getting close. I tried to get really close but he kept moving away, which was fine. But that's basically it. Never knew there's those owls there. Would be something cool to see though.
I have been told by some of the guys who do the Hawk and Falcon Migration counts, they see them in the dunes down by field 2 and all the way to Democrat Point.
I'll have to find out, I'd def be interested in shooting there and seeing them. I only have my 70-300 lens so I don't know how I'll be able to photograph them unless they're tame and ok with humans somewhat close to them. I'd need a bigger lens. Add that to my procrastination list LOL.
The funny thing about long lenses is, once you have a 400, you want a 500, once you have a 500 you want a 600 and if money grew on trees we would all have 800 primes LOL
Yeah, just priced some of them online...it won't happen in my lifetime unless I hit the lotto at some point. Wishful thinking.
Sort of untrue... I like my 400 better than the 600 for most of that I shoot, though there are days I'd like an 800 or longer...
It all depends on what to shot and where you shot. If you are shooting Raptors you need longer lenses, most Eagles and Hawks, Falcons keep their distance and unless you are using a blind and baiting (which is highly controversial and I do not do) a 500mm plus lenses is a real plus, don't get me wrong my 100-400 is my most used lens, but I have used the 500mm and 600mm Primes and you can't beat them for speed (one day I will own a 500 or 600mm prime) reminds me I have to play Lotto tonight LoL
I was lucky enough to see and shoot a snowy owl on the dunes at Jones Beach two years ago. There has been some buzz about sighting this year at Jones Beach at at Napeague State Park out near Montauk. I monitor Long Island Birds.com and ebird.org for news on sightings. I'm also anxious to see and photograph various species of owls but it seems that it takes a lot of time, research, commitment and LUCK! Here's a link to my best snowy owl photo. He was being harassed by a peregrine falcon. Shot with a Nikon 80 - 400. http://www.katherinefisherphotography.com/birds/h338c5bca#h338c5bca
Great Photo of the Snowy, I love the pose, I to monitor Long Island Birds.com for bird sighting. I had seen the snowy owl sighting this morning it was sighted yesterday by Dune road/Ponquogue Bridge. Iwill have to take a ride over soon.
I was told by a guy(I love a sentence that starts like that) there a Barn owls at The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, any body know if its true and where abouts are they?
Made a trip to Jones Beach on Wednesday. Drove to the far west end and walked down the beach until we spotted other photographers/birders on the dunes. It was a lucky day! http://www.flickr.com/photos/sunflowerkat/6687981491/in/photostream/lightbox/
Guys don't be expecting any snowy owl updates on LIBIRDING. She has decided to not update on the owls whereabouts for fear of overcrowding the bird and its own safety etc. Apparently there have been way way way too many photographers out there looking for him down at Jones Beach and things have even gotten heated between photographers and birdwatchers alike. I recently found this out at a NWPLI meeting in Bay Shore.
